The Intense Pain of a Broken Heart
“Hearts will never be practical until they are made unbreakable.” –The Wizard of Oz, talking to the Tin Man
We all know the agony of body, mind and spirit that results from a broken heart. Hearts break for many different reasons. Some hearts are broken by the death of a close friend or family member. Some are broken by the loss of a cherished dream, such as not getting a job you worked hard for or not being accepted at the university you selected as your first choice. Other hearts are broken when friends move far away and the contact you count on is taken away. Most often, however, we associate the term “heart-broken” with the break-up of a romantic relationship through divorce or a lover’s rejection..
Expressing Your Pain in Music
Almost everyone has experienced heart-break. Perhaps that is why songs that express the feelings of loss and sorrow are s popular. When our hearts are breaking we get comfort from listening to songs about heart-break. Here’s one of my favorites, “How Can You Mend a Broken heart?” by the BeeGees.
As the singer thinks about his younger days when of the most telling lines is “No one said about about the sorrow.” Break-ups and heart-aches are inevitable, but we don’t talk about them. Maybe it’s time we did.

The Lyrics: “How Can You Mend a Broken heart?” by the Bee Gees
I can think of younger days when living for my life
Was everything a man could want to do.
I could never see tomorrow, but I was never told about the sorrow.
And how can you mend a broken heart?
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?
How can you mend a this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart and let me live again.
I can still feel the breeze that rustles through the trees
And misty memories of days gone by
We could never see tomorrow, no one said a word about the sorrow.
And how can you mend a broken heart?
How can you stop the rain from falling down?
How can you stop the sun from shining?
What makes the world go round?
How can you mend this broken man?
How can a loser ever win?
Please help me mend my broken heart and let me live again.
