I was a freshman in college when Badfinger recorded this song in 1970. The next year Harry Nillson sang it, and I had my first broken heart (but not my last). I used to listen to this song on the radio and cry inside. I wanted her back, but she moved back home and married her high school sweetheart. I guess he wanted her back, too.
It really does seem that you can’t live without the one you love (or think you love–I had to stop to think a couple of minutes before i could remember the girl’s name, but I remember the pain clearly ). It felt like I was going to die, but I didn’t.

The Lyrics “I Can’t Live If Living Is Without You” (Recorded First by Badfinger and Covered by Harry Nillson)
No, I can’t forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that’s just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes, it shows
No, I can’t forget tomorrow
When I think of all my sorrow
When I had you there but then I let you go
And now it’s only fair that I should let you know
What you should know
I can’t live if living is without you
I can’t live, I can’t give any more
I can’t live if living is without you
I can’t give, I can’t give any more
No, I can’t forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that’s just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes your sorrow shows
Yes, it shows
I can’t live if living is without you
I can’t live, I can’t give anymore
I can’t live if living is without you
I can’t live, I can’t give anymore
The line ” You always smile, but in your eyes your sorrow shows, yes, it shows” captures how futile it is sometimes to hide your heartache, even though you valiantly attempt to cover it up around others. It helps to find a person who will listen, or just be with you in silence, and feel your pain with you. I also wrote very bad) poetry about y heartbreak, and that helped me a lot to get to the other side of the pain. Maybe I’ll share some of them in a later post.
